South Korea, India or Thailand: Choosing a Destination for Your Surgery

June 10, 2026

One of the first questions people ask is "where would I even go?" The honest answer is that the right destination depends on your procedure, your budget, and how far you want to travel, not on a single "best" country. Here is how to think about it.

Start with the procedure, not the country

The most important factor is matching your specific procedure to a hospital with deep experience and strong outcomes in exactly that area. A great cardiac centre is not automatically the best choice for a knee, and vice versa. We start every match from your case, then choose the destination that fits it best, rather than steering everyone to one place.

How the leading destinations compare

South Korea sits at the premium end. Its top hospitals rank among the best in the world and are especially strong for complex, cancer, and advanced diagnostic care. Costs are higher than other Asian options but still very competitive, and the quality is exceptional.

India offers the widest range at the lowest cost, with internationally ranked hospitals and very experienced surgical teams across orthopedics, cardiac, oncology, and fertility. For major surgery on a budget, the value is hard to beat, and English is widely spoken in the leading hospitals.

Thailand is the well-established middle ground, with world-class international hospitals long experienced in treating foreign patients, strong across orthopedics and a wide range of specialties, and a comfortable recovery environment.

Closer to home, Mexico and Costa Rica are excellent for shorter trips, especially for dental and orthopedic work, with less travel and minimal time-zone disruption.

The factors that should drive your choice

Beyond the procedure, weigh four things: the hospital's accreditation and track record for your specific surgery, the all-in cost, the length and comfort of the journey including recovery before flying home, and any personal considerations. We also run a current safety and travel-advisory review for any destination before a booking is confirmed, because conditions change.

How we help

Meridian Care Group partners only with JCI-accredited hospitals across several destinations, which means we can match you to the right place rather than forcing your case to fit one country. We will lay out the realistic options for your procedure, with honest pros and cons, and coordinate the entire trip once you decide.
